My Winning Career Fair

It was a successful day marked by inspiring and engaging activities for the employees of GSK Malaysia at the recent My Winning Career Fair. The Fair held on 22 February 2017 at Ulu Kelang site also ensured that the high spirits were complemented by important messages around employee empowerment and career development.

More than 100 GSK employees participated in the event. The objective was to create an atmosphere of excitement and boost the energy by which employees could learn tips on how to build a winning career at GSK. The tone for the day was set with some opening words from GSK Consumer Healthcare Malaysia General Manager, Stacy Wallace, at the Townhall session in the morning. As Ms. Wallace pointed out, "We want our career development to be the best in Malaysia which means we all must put time and energy into building our own winning careers."

The event started off with an introduction of the career model and how employees can develop and succeed in GSK. Employees were motivated when they viewed numerous video clips on the best career tips recorded by some of the company's leaders. Two senior leaders also shared their career stories and successes to provide inspiration to the others on how to build a winning career.

During the course of the career fair, the attendees were divided into four groups, with 25 participants in each group. Each group attended all four Interactive Sessions, namely: Accountability for Career Development; Understanding How 9 Box Impacts their Developmental Plans; Building a Focused Development Plan, and Understanding the GSK Expectations. The sessions were facilitated by the Leadership Team with support from HR. Lee Yuen Khea, Commercial Management (Consumer Healthcare) commented that "most of the sessions were very engaging and I have a better understanding of taking accountability on driving my own career."

Various information booths were set-up during the fair. The primary goal was to provide employees with the opportunity to have a better understanding of GSK's existing development tools. Among the most popular booths were "Business Skills" and "How To Enhance Digital Profile Via LinkedIn". In the Business Skills booth, employees were briefed on the various resources available such as videos, book reviews, e-learning and access to instructor-led course, all in one place. The 2017 training calendar was also shared with the employees.

Many GSK Malaysia employees found the activities of GSK's My Winning Career Fair very helpful in formulating and clarifying their own career growth. As Primita Joseph Francis, Regulatory Affairs Manager remarked:
"As a fairly new employee to GSK, I found that the company's My Winning Career Fair initiative was extremely informative for the career progression and self-development I had in mind. I was also happy to know that there are different resources and avenues provided by GSK to enable me to independently develop myself, and also through open and active communication with my manager."

Based on the feedback survey which was conducted recently, 95% of the respondents agreed that 'My Winning Career Fair' was a useful experience for them. While 14% of the respondents strongly agreed and 64% of the respondents agreed that the fair gave them a better understanding of GSK's development tools and where they can find them.

At the end of the Career Fair, the employees were asked to book a meeting session with their respective Line Managers for a career conversation and to complete their Development Plan within the stipulated timeframe. Overall, the Career Fair in Malaysia was considered a huge success and we are looking forward to hosting a similar programme in the near future!
